What a surprise!!!

A basic Wednesday in the life of an electrical and electronic engineering student usually starts of with the struggle of waking up at 07:00. At about 07:25 I get up and have breakfast in our dinning hall. After breakfast I take a shower and get dressed, pack my bag and then I'm off to class. By this time it's about 07:58 so it's kind of a rush to get to class because our first class starts at 08:00. My timetable on a Wednesday is not that hectic, we have two classes and we finish our day of with a tutorial period. Each class is about 50 minutes and a tutorial period is about 3 hours but our lecturer usually lets us sign out after 2 hours. At 13:00 we have launch at our residence, on Wednesdays we get chicken schnitzel and chips. Wednesdays is one of my favorite days in the week because of chicken schnitzel.

The thing that made yesterday so special was that when I walked into my room to leave my back there. I saw a box on my bed. At first I thought who came in my room without me being their. I picked the box up and it felt heavy, so I knew there was something in it. I didn't want to open it but because I'm so curious I had to see what was inside. When I opened the box I saw a pair of shoes and a message inside. The message basically said that I am one of the best friends that someone could have, Devan. I couldn't believe it! I thought it was a joke but no it wasn't, oh the joy that I felt. I couldn't stop smiling because I of my overwhelming happiness.

Devan I just want to thank you for this gift. The way you did it and asked my shoe size was so sneaky bra, I had no clue what you were planning. I really needed some new shoes because my old ones had a few large air vents. I'm so grateful for this surprise, they say you meet your life long friends in university and it really feels that way. I have made a lot of good friends in university.

These guys came a long way, we build a lot of good memories together!

Appreciate what you have and work hard...

It feels like only yesterday when I was getting ready to go to university. I felt scared and excited all at once. It was going to be my first time staying in a residence and being away from my parents for more then two weeks. Ah the sadness that came over me that day when my parents dropped me off and said good luck and work hard. I couldn't help but feel sad. Tears were dripping from my eyes, I tried fighting it but it didn't help. As soon as my mom saw me she started crying as well. The relationship between my mom and I has always been very strong. She is my best friend, mentor and mother. The love I have for her is infinite.

I am in my third year now and our relationship is still strong, it might even be stronger. Just recently I remembered that I brought along an old watch that my mother had bought me when I was a little boy. Back in those days the coolest digital watches had a led back light. And I was the only one out of all my friends who didn't have this type of watch with the led back light. I was only in grade 4 at the time, about 10 years old. My favorite colour was blue and that was the same colour as the led back lights of the watches my friends had. The desire to get a watch grew stronger everyday when my friends showed of their digital watches with the blue led back lights.

My birthday was coming up and I thought to myself, what if I get a watch for my birthday? So I went to my mother and I asked her if she could buy me a watch for my birthday. My mom always played it of as if she wasn't going to buy me a watch for my birthday. On the day of my 10th birthday my mom gave me a little box wrapped in paper. Back then I didn't know proper watches came in a little box. So without knowing what it was I opened the little metal box and there it was, a Casio Illuminator watch. Oh the joy overflowed inside of me. It felt like nothing I have ever felt in my life.

So obviously the watch had to have a led back light. My whatch game with more futures than those of my friends. Mine was waterproof it has an alarm with a snooze function and it could signal out every hour that went by. After every hour it would beep to tell me that an hour has passed.

Then out of all the positive things came one negative thing, the led back light wasn't blue... it was green!!! Let me just stop the story for a moment, I was still a child, I didn't know what I was thinking and I might have been spoiled a bit. Back to the story. As soon as I saw that the led back light was green, I started to cry and my mother didn't know what was going on. She saw me going from this happy little boy to a tantrum throwing spoiled brat. I told her that I didn't want it and that she could keep if she wanted it. I was so mad at her. As the days went by I started  wearing my "stupid watch". And a few months later I saw that one of my friends had the same watch, this gave me more confidence to wear my watch.

Seeing the watch now just made me feel bad because of the way I treated my mother when she just wanted to do something nice for me. My mother always tried to buy me the nice toys and electronics I wanted, thinking of me and my feelings although I didn't appreciate her efforts back then. I didn't grow up having the richest parents but they still made an effort to ensure that I don't see what we have and don't have. They did it so well that I only noticed in high school that we didn't have all the money in the world.

There is such a big difference between what I had growing up and what my sister had growing up. I am the oldest and I had the most toys and she just had to share what I had. My role as a big brother only showed when I started to notice what was going on around me and that not everything is about me. My sister had to wear my old clothes and because she grew up like that it didn't feel weird to her. I was the guy in our family making fun of her not knowing what our situation was.

I just wish that I could go back and make her childhood more worthwhile and make the life of my parents a bit easier. Luckily I noticed what was going on around me and what my parents and my little sister had to give up in raising me. Even now I am tearing up.

I know that I can't go back in time and undo what I did but what I can do is work hard now and finish my degree so that when my sister goes to university I can help my parents financially so that my sister can study carefree. Hopefully one day I'll be able to repay my parents for everything that they have done for me.

Mommy, Daddy and little Sis I love you and I'll do my best!!!

Taking table tennis to a new level...

I recently received a table tennis robot from one of my friends. I am so excited and I can't wait to use it for the first time. Because of my tight schedule between classes and studying I don't have much time to work on my table tennis. And when I feel the need to practice there is no one around to play against.

In my residence there is not a lot of guys who like to work on their table tennis game, they usually just pitch for a match and play. So I will never be able to work on my technique with a partner because the way it usually works is, a lot of guys show up to play table tennis and than you have to start playing matches otherwise the waiting period is going to be too long for the players in line.

Now I have this wonderful machine that I'm borrowing this week, just for me. I will be able to work on my footwork and a variety of forehand and backhand strokes. The nice thing about the table tennis robot is that you can adjust the shooting frequency, the placement of the ball and the spin on the ball. All of the different settings are sent via remote, so you don't have to walk all the way to the robot to change the settings. You can even program this machine to shoot balls in a sequence making it possible for you to practice different drills.

Good News!!!

This week has been a very tough week but it ended up being one of my best weeks so far. I had a practical for three of my 5 modules and for each practical I had to do theoretical preparation. By far the hardest part of a practical is the theoretical preparation. If you end up doing your calculation and circuit design on the same day as the practical, then you are done for. I know that this is going to sound bad but that is what I did this week, I pretty much did my practical preparation on the day of practical. All of those days ended up being long and tiring. I had to do it because most of my time went into fixing and doing preparation for my E-Design demo that I had to do on Thursday. This was more important than all of my other practicals.

So for this weeks E-Design we had to create a remote for our previously built gate. The lecturer gave us two buttons, a Renesas G12 and a programmer to program the G12. They also gave us an infrared LED and a receiver which we had to connect to the G14, the main controller of the gate. Each of us were given a hexadecimal address for our specific remotes so that our remotes doesn't open other students gates.

We had to send information from our remote to the gate using Manchester coding. The information had to be sent in binary and had to be decoded at the gate. The three instructions that we had to send was open, close and stop. One button opened the gate and the other button closed the gate and if both buttons were pressed at the same time then the gate had to stop.

Building and coding the remote was quite easy but the most challenging part was to decode the information that was sent. So I sampled the information for decoding using a timer and an edge triggered pin. If the pin was triggered the timer had to start and only read information from the receiver at an interval of 889 micro seconds.

Everything worked fine at the end of the day and I managed to get all of my marks for the demo that day. This was my first successful demo, all the other demos had some sort of problem on the day of the demo.

The good news is that I now have a much better chance of passing this module which had me all negative and sleep deprived.

Before I forget, I just want to mention that I took part in a table tennis tournament this weekend and I made it all the way to the semi-final. I must say, best week so far.

E-Design... making my life horrible!!!

I had a tough couple of months and it's only the beginning of the year. This term hasn't been going good at all. I am in my third year of study, electrical and electronic engineering, and I am starting to feel how it is getting a bit tougher but at the same time as though the work hasn't changed. It's a weird feeling and I don't know how to explain it.

This year we have a module called E-Design which we'll have in both semesters. E-Design is a practical module where we have to design and build an electronically operated gate. We were given a basic PCB with a specific layout, Renesas RL78-G14, LCD screen and number of other components needed to design and build the gate.

Our first task was to build a 5V power supply, it wasn't that hard to build because we were given about 12V from a DC power supply and we had to use a voltage regulated circuit to step the 12V down to 5V. After finishing the power supply we had to connect the RL78 to an external UART and then we connected the RL78 to the LCD screen and display a message on the LCD screen showing the current operating mode, test or normal mode. For know nothing has to happen in normal mode except for switching into test mode and displaying a welcome message .

The whole setup gets connected to a computer for testing via the external UART. Different commands are then sent to the RL78. When in test mode characters received that are not commands must be stored in a buffer. The contents of the buffer has to be displayed when the display command gets received. There are commands for opening and closing the gate, reading the current of the DC geared motor and switching the buzzer on and off. There is also a check status command which receives the status of the gate, opened or closed.

For this module we have 4 demos that we have to do, the 4th demo will be the final product, we have tests that we write on specific parts of the project that we had finished and then finally a report that we have to write. The requirements for passing the module is maintaining an average of 50% in all the different assessments. So that is not good news for me because, believe it or not, I failed the first two demos and the first test. Things aren't looking to good for this module but I believe that I can still pass this module. One of my goals while doing my undergrad is not to repeat a module.

So I failed my first 2 demos not because I could not do the work but because I had some bad luck when I had to go and demo my project, The first time my PCB was faulty and while trying to solve that problem I managed blow up my RL78 board and I had to buy a new one. I was allowed to demo the following week but only for half of the marks.

The second time wasn't very different than the first time, one of my my friends who already went to demo his project told me that the lecturer didn't have a problem with the pin of the gate popping out and that the lecturer didn't subtract any marks for that. I thought that I was also going to get full marks for that section, so I went to demo my gate. Before the demo I told the lecturer that the pin pops out and he told me that it was fine and that the pin on his gate also pops out. Feeling confident, that I was going to get all of my marks, we continued with the demo.

When we tested if the gate opened and closed the pin popped out, still chilled and calm. because the lecturer said it was fine And then all of a sudden the lecturer said that it is going to be a problem and that he has to subtract marks. Now I was stressed because I told him before hand about the pin and he didn't have a problem with it and the same thing happened to my friend and he received  all of his marks when his pin popped out. Keep in mind that at this point in time my DC motor could rotate clock - and counter clockwise.

I told the lecturer that I was actually hoping to get all of my marks for that section, it was 5 marks out of the the total that was 12 marks, and he just looked at me and said that that is how it is and if I wanted to I could go and fix it and come back and demo my project again. At this point I was thinking to myself, do you really want to lose 3 out of the 5 marks because a pin popped out... just go fix it and come back... So that is what I did. Keep in mind that there was no need to solder or program anything I just had to take the wire and bend it into a shape so that it would not pop out if the gate closed or opened.

Finishing up the gate I decided to give it a test run... I could not believe my eyes for what I'd seen, all of a sudden my DC motor wasn't rotating in any direction. The DC motor could rotate but not with the control of my RL78 board but by connecting an external power supply to the motor. Now instead of only losing 3 marks for this section I was going to lose 5 marks, and that because of a stupid pin. And that is how I managed to fail my second demo as well, dumb luck!

There are still two more demos left and I have to ace both of them if I want to pass this module, I believe that the tests aren't such a big problem because I can just study for them.

Forex trading!

So I have been doing a bit of research on forex, foreign exchange trading, and at first it looked easy.  Watching a lot of YouTube videos of different success stories of traders getting rich and buying nice houses and cars. With every trade you have a 50 percent chance of making a profit. The nice thing is that you can trade anytime during the day or the week and if don't want to trade that day or week then you don't have to. Because forex trading is so volatile you could either make money very quickly or lose it very quickly.

When trading forex you have a certain amount of gain that you can make or lose on your trade, this is called your leverage. Different brokers give different leverages. The higher the leverage the higher the risk is of losing money but the faster you can make money. The lower the leverage the lower the risk is of losing money but it takes a bit longer to make money.

For first time traders it is usually recommended that you trade with low leverage and as you gain more experience to work your way up and increase the leverage. It is important to set a stop-loss and always check what the spread is of an instrument before trading. The spread is the difference between the buy and sell price. For a high spread you'll have to make a few pips before you can make a profit, so you basically start off with a loss. Pips are the smallest significant digit of the buying or selling price of an instrument, it is usually the fourth digit after the decimal point. A lower spread causes you to start with a lower loss thus making it "easier" to make a profit on your trade.

My days as a forex trader was short lived. If you can even call it forex trading. It started of with me opening up demo trading accounts just to get to know how forex trading works. I managed to make a nice profit but I wasn't trading with real money so the profit I made wasn't real (it still gave me a bit of satisfaction when I made a profit). Using a demo account you would take larger risks because you are not using your hard earned cash but when using your own cash the game changes slightly. I traded with different apps like trader212, meta-trader 4 and etoro.

I liked how these brokers kept me up to date by sending me emails of daily market analysis done by professionals and what is to be expected during the next couple of weeks. Then I also tried other brokers as well, but made a mistake of opening an account with easy-forex (not because of scamming or anything). A few days after opening the account (remember this was only for trading demo accounts) they gave me a call. It was a nice lady on the phone telling me about all the different options and offers they have and because I wanted to try it out, this was a done deal for me.

They offered me free training on how to use their trading platform, they even sent me a link with videos for beginner traders telling them what forex is and how it works. At first I was a bit afraid to risk my own money but I then decided to make my first transfer. I went with the lowest starting amount which was 25 USD, which is like nothing in the forex trading world. I didn't understand what they meant when they told me that the minimum amount for trading was 25 USD but I found out quickly what it had meant.

So after making my first payment my trading account was now active and I could start trading. I remember just sitting in front of the laptop starring at my account balance, not knowing how to trade. I waited for my trainer to call me and start our first lesson. The first lesson was about getting to know the platform and how to make a trade, set a stop-loss and choose trading instruments. I was so excited because I thought this was it, using my money to make money.

While being trained via cellphone the trainer told me to make a trade, I was so confused. All the YouTube videos I had watched told me that I should analyze the market before deciding to make a trade and here this guy was and he told me to make a trade without thinking about it. Luckily with easy-forex your first trade is risk free, meaning that if you lose money they will pay it back but even better if you make a profit they will double it. And feeling at ease I made my first trade. I remember my trainer telling me to look at the chart and asking me to tell him whether the currency will rise or drop, I went with drop because a previous high peak was reached and I saw a bit of resistance. But what a trader should always do is not only look at one chart but at many different time intervals of the chart. We were just looking at a 5 minute chart and I made my decision based on that. So dumb right!

Any way, I thought that the currency will drop and I started selling. My trainer then wanted me to set the stop-loss as low as possible so that I would not lose a lot more than I have. As I was busy looking at the amount of profit I was making and I didn't feel good about it, I guess that is the difference between trading real money and fake money. The profit was red and I was on the edge of hitting my stop-loss, as it turns out I lost a few dollars but got it back the following day.

Feeling the urge of just making a profit I started trading that day as well (just as I gained my money back). One thing you should never do, and this is a big no, revenge trade. I made a trade, lost money, made another trade and lost money again until eventually my account was empty. It was a bad day for me, but I still want to be a trader but not as a full-time thing maybe as a hobby on the side.

I am saving so that I can have enough money to trade again and then hopefully learning from my mistakes.

Home sweet home!

It feels great to be back at university. I had to come back earlier than the rest of the students because this year I'm a mentor for new first years staying in our res. There is a lot of work that I have to do this year, helping the first years and also passing my modules.
I arrived in Stellenbosch at 14:00, the weather was not as I expected it to be. The temperature went to round about 40 °C, forcing me to do nothing. Heat always tires me out. When arriving at res I had to climb three flights of stairs, I can't even remember why I chose a room on the third floor. Climbing the three flights of stairs wasn't the hardest part but carrying four bags as well was, that was me being mentally tough and forcing my body to perform at its ultimate.
I packed out everything, opened the windows and I left the door open. To my surprise there was no wind blowing threw my room, the heat stayed in the room. I felt hopeless and decided to take a nap, I couldn't sleep at all, my body was all sweaty and sticky. Eventually I took a nap but only for an hour.
Being a first year mentor isn't going to be easy. I took a look at what was expected from a mentor and it seems like it's going to be a challenge. As a mentor I don't only have to focus on my mentees' academics but on six different aspects involving a successful student lifestyle as well.
The six points that I have to cover during the year is:
1. Physical Wellness
2. Emotional Wellness
3. Intellectual Wellness
4. Occupational Wellness
5. Social Wellness
6. Spiritual Wellness
As you can see these aren't easy topics to cover if you don't have the proper training as to teaching your mentees these topics. In order to cover all six topics, we are given only one day training. I can't even imagine that it will be enough!

Being lazy in the swimming pool.

I went for a swim, it had to at 10:00 otherwise the sun would have focused all of its heat on me. When I touched the water it felt so nice and without thinking twice I just got in.
Being lazy and all, I decided to ask my sister to go fetch a cap. I put the cap on my head and sat on a chair in the water. This was the most relaxing thing that I have ever done in my life.
Sitting in the swimming pool with the water covering my body, just touching the top of my shoulders, leaving my head above the water and the cap providing enough shade to cover my face. A burnt face was not what I was looking for so some precautions had to be taken. I didn't use my arms or legs I just sat there, closed my eyes and listened to nature.
Thinking back I would have liked an outdoor TV and some sort of floating table that contained a variety of exotic fruits, water and different types of juice. I guess I'll do that next time.
There is literally no better way of relaxing when the sun is striving to reach its maximum temperature. I want this to be a new trend, I even thought of a name for it... "pool-sitting". "Pool-sitting" - sitting on a chair in the swimming pool. While pool sitting you can even take a paddle and paddle yourself around in the pool.
So what if your pool is too deep and you can't sit comfortably on a chair in your pool? Well I suggest taking a few chairs and putting them on top of each other, making the sitting profile of the top chair higher than only using one chair. Or asking a neighbour with a shallow pool if you could "pool-sit" in their swimming pool.
Advantages - no sunburn, no heat, ultimate relaxation, ultimate escape from the wrath of the sun.
Disadvantages - I would like to say none but chilling too long in the water causes wrinkled fingers and toes. After leaving the water, wrinkled toes and fingers will become normal after a few minutes.
Please be careful while "pool-sitting". I will not be held responsible for any damage or lives lost while "pool-sitting". "Pool-sitting" should be done at own risk and for children under the age of eighteen parental supervision is advised.
Enjoy your summer and be sure to try out this new trend.

Heat Wave

Most probably the worst thing that could happen to you when you are staying in Oudtshoorn, South Africa, is a heat wave. Oudtshoorn is already a very hot town to stay in. Oudtshoorn is also known for the ostriches and the Cango Caves.
I can't take the heat anymore! There is no escape, it feels like you are being covered by this huge blanket and there is no way out of it. Today I just stayed at home. I have been watching movies the whole time. Imagine a room that consists of four walls and two of those walls are actually made of glass. Now imagine that this room is situated at the corner of the house and the glass corner of the house gets the most sun. By now you should have the idea that this room is kind of like an oven and as the time goes by it just gets warmer and warmer. Some of you might be wondering why I didn't switch on the air conditioning... well that is because there is no air conditioning.
I opened the front door and the windows but all that came in was hot air. Feeling sweaty and lazy just laying on the couch watching movies and just praying that some how the temperature will go down.
We have a swimming pool but the sun was to extreme. I'd rather figure out a way to deal with the heat than the risk of getting skin cancer. And I am not exaggerating, that is what it felt like. Well that's life in the Klein Karoo for you.
This global warming thing isn't working for me. I wish I could find out the solution for this whole global warming problem or some sort of equation that could make a human being evolve instantly and cope with the surrounding changes.
I believe that it's up to me to find a way of saving the human race. My super hero name will be "Super Timmy"! And my slogan "Global warming, world peace".

My lifetime goals... Dream garage.

There is a lot of cool stuff in the world but the one thing that I like the most is supercars.

Supercars are built for performance, meaning to go fast and corner well. The first supercar that I liked was the Ferrari F430. After seeing that car I knew that I have to own a supercar when I am older.

My love for fast cars kept on growing after watching the "Fast and the Furious" movies. While watching the movies I used to imagine myself being "Brian" and driving his Nissan Skyline.

One of my biggest hobbies in school was to draw these super fast cars. My friends and I used to gather pictures of cars and draw them.

Now a days there is a lot of supercars in the world some unaffordable and others a bit more affordable. For me the reasonably priced supercar is the Nissan GTR. This is one of the world's fastest cars from 0 - 100 km/h. Doing it in under 3 seconds. It has enough space for four people to sit and some luggage space for bags. The Nissan GTR is one of the cars I have to have.

The next car on my shopping list will be the Porsche 911 turbo S. It is a bit more expensive than the GTR but it is a bit more comfortable and better equipped. The 0 - 100 km/h time is a bit slower than that of the GTR but it can accelerate a lot faster than the GTR after 100 km/h. Thus the 911 will catch up with the GTR and beat it in a quarter mile drag.

Lamborghini famous for its scissor doors and one of the most amazing car brands next to Ferrari. The two Lamborghini's that I would buy would be the Huracan and the Aventador. Both of these cars are luxurious and fast. Not to mention the noise these cars make, it's to die for.

The Ferrari F12 and the Ferrari FF is also a must have for me. I still have to decide between red, white and silver. The FF is a supercar with four doors and can easily carry four people. I would use the FF for driving around family and friends and the F12 for touring. The F12 is Ferrari's solution for grand touring and it houses a beastly V12 engine.

To sum up my dream garage:

1. Nissan GTR
2. Porsche 911 turbo S
3. Lamborghini Huracan
4. Ferrari FF
5. Ferrari F12
6. Lamborghini Aventador

I hope to one day own all of these cars. I just have to work hard and invent something amazing that will change the world, like Bill Gates. If I can't manage to do that I will most probably not be able to buy all six of these cars and only the first two. I will never give up, this list will be my motivation to be awesome.

You know what they say... wishes do come true!

Summer in Oudtshoorn South Africa, my home town.

A few weird things happened this summer.

While I was watering the grass in our backyard, I felt the need to look inside of our swimming pool. I caught a little mouse swimming in the swimming pool. I quickly ran into the house to fetch my phone, so that I could have proof of what happened.

The mouse didn't really swim, it was more like chilling and walking around in the water. This was quite a funny thing for me to see. I have to say the weather that day was flipping hot, so I can't blame the little guy for wanting to cool down in our swimming pool. I went back into the house to charge my phone. When I came back out, the mouse ran away. I guess he finished his daily swimming.

A few weeks later, while we were having a braai, I saw something getting into our swimming pool in our backyard. I wasn't sure what it was. But as I stood up out of my chair, I saw a small snake in our swimming pool. It had also decided to go for a dip. Hot summer days causing animals to take a swim in our swimming pool.

It was so cool but scary at the same time to see how the snake moved its body side to side to swim. After a few minutes my father and I decided to take it out of the swimming pool. It was quite a challenge for my dad to take it out as I was busy filming the whole event. My dad used the swimming pool's broom to try and take it out but every time the snake slid of from the broom. Eventually we managed to get it out. We watched as it moved from our backyard into the neighbours backyard. Hopefully they knew how to take care of it.

I wonder what I'll see happen next.
